Três Fragmentos / Three Fragments for Solo Clarinet (1985-7)

três fragmentos foi escrita no porto em 1985/6 e revista em 1994. 

a minha preocupação na altura prendia-se com o seguinte problema: como compôr música utilizando séries de doze sons, ou seja, utilizando um vocabulário predominantemente cromático, mas evitando a esfera de intervalos típicos da música post-serial?  utilizei uma técnica de interpolação de intervalos fixos entre cada nota da série - 2ª maior na I e 3ª menor na II. penso que o intervalo escolhido é mais importante para a definição do carácter da peça do que a série. repeti fragmentos à vontade, nisso stravinsky paira por cima. a III é uma espécie de scherzo construído literalmente em torno de sol/fá# central.

my concern at the time was with the following problem: how to compose music using series of twelve tones, in other words, using a predominantly chromatic vocabulary, but avoiding the sphere of intervals typical of post-serial music? I used a technique of interpolating fixed intervals between each note in the series - 2nd major in I and 3rd minor in II. i think the interval chosen is more important in defining the character of the piece than the series. I repeated fragments at will, in that stravinsky hovers above. iii is a kind of scherzo literally built around the central G/F#.’
